bigcommerce update customer

Does anyone know if it is possible to update an existing customer in Bigcommerce vs creating a new one?
Use case: Customers fill out a form to request their web login. Some customers already have a web login and Bigcommerce tosses the error of "user already exists." Would like to find a way that if the user already exists, it updates that contact.
